Book Buddies

Inspiring Young Minds through One-on-One Reading

More than 40 percent of 4th-graders in Connecticut did not reach reading proficiency in 2024, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Federation’s Book Buddies program steps in to help fill the gap.

Building Readers, One Book Buddy at a Time

Each week,  Federation-trained volunteers  provide one-on-one reading practice with 2nd-grade students at Blackham School in Bridgeport, creating an experience around books that is positive and enjoyable. Teachers select students  “on the cusp” of reading proficiency who would benefit from individual attention, exposure to good books, and great role models who will help them develop the motivation to learn to read. The result – self-confidence, early literacy and critical-thinking skills, coupled with relationships that help build a life-long love of reading.
